Carol Clover thought that horror films play on masochistic fears, which means the enjoyment of receiving pain. She thought that they often involve screaming female victim being brutally killed by sadists, who are people that enjoy inflicting pain, usually being males. The killers in horror films have often suffered during their childhood and has a lot of issues or are sexually disturbed. For example, Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) was a child molester. Carol clover writes that horror films should be in places that are associated with fear, such as decaying and haunted mansions like in Texas Chainsaw (1974) and Halloween (1978). These places do not only physically look terrible but most of them have terror stories behind them. At the beginning, the walls of the house seem to be the only thing that is able separate the killer from the victim, however, the victim becomes trapped in their own environment. T.D A.M
This creates irony as they thought it was their protection, whereas, all along the killer would have been able to get inside the barrier as the killer is almost unstoppable. Clover had the idea that there is always a final girl in horror films, that is often the innocent, intelligent and watchful to the extent that she is constantly paranoid. The final girl often has a boyish name, suggesting that the victims are always the girly and sweet, yet deceiving girl. However, this is most likely to appear in slasher movies and is completely different from physco horrors. A.R
