mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene is what creates a scene, it includes the props used in the scene, costumes, makeup and the setting.
The Woman In Black
By analysing the mise-en-scene in The Woman In Black (2012) we were able to take into consideration how it takes effect. Not many titles were shown at the beginning of the scene as the filmmakers want you to get straight into the horror. The three little girls on the scene were playing with a china tea set and china dolls. The girls were dressed similar to the dolls they were playing with. This scene was set in a gloomy old attack which looked Victoria, the only light was coming in from three long windows which seemed bright and dream like. The opening title sequence showed a misty background which also gave the impression of a dream like scene. The breaking of the China when the three neatly dressed girls walked towards the window represented the smashing of their bones once they hit the ground after jumping out of the windows together. After seeing the girls jump we also see how the windows could represent heaven as they fall to their death.

There are some uses of the theories in this scene. Cravens idea of the absence of parents, no one is in the creepy looking loft with them but we hear them (we assume they are the parents) scream as the children jump. Also that the worst things happen in the safest place, the audience think the children would be safe as they are in their own environment, but it ends up being the place that causes them to kill themselves. We can also argue that this scene involves a use of the Clover theory as the room looks as if it has a history rather than being a safe place. Although, the room is used later on in a film and we know that there is already history there, the opening scene shows the terrible history taking place. T.D
Ils
The mise-en-scene in Iles (2006) is what made the scene scary as it was set in a secluded area in the pitch black. We see a shot of the road that the car is stuck on. The low key lighting along with the street lights gives the illusion that the roads goes on forever. The characters are dressed casually, although, the daughter in the sequence could be considered as 'dressed inappropriatley'. The way she is dressed makes her a target, this links with Valdrow's theory as it suggests that the girl is reckless and doesn't respect herself (isn't a virgin, drinks, smokes etc).

The Clover theory is the main theory that you notice in the opening sequence of Ils as when the two women are driving in the car they mention the absence of the father. After the mother dies there is then no parents at all. The absence of parents is one of the main conventions of a Carol Clover theorised horror. T.D
